Karel Lannoo has been Chief Executive of the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) since 2000 and Senior Research Fellow since 1997. The CEPS is one of the leading independent European think tanks, with a strong reputation in economic and foreign policy research. It has total revenues of €7 million (2006) and employs about 45 people. Before joining the CEPS, Karel Lannoo was employed in the cultural sector and worked for the Italian conglomerate Ferruzzi and for a professional federation. He was also active as a free-lance journalist for specialized publications. His main areas of expertise are financial market integration and regulation, corporate governance and the European Monetary Union. He is a member of the European Shadow Financial Regulatory Committee (ESFRC) and on the advisory board of the European Capital Markets Institute (ECMI). He has published numerous articles in specialized magazines and journals on EU and financial regulation matters. He spoke at several European Parliament and European Commission hearings and participated in studies for various national and international bodies (such as EU institutions, the OECD, the ADB and the World Bank). He is a regular speaker at international conferences and is an independent director of the Bolsas y Mercados Españoles (BME), the company that runs the Madrid stock exchange.

Mr. Lannoo holds a baccalaureate in philosophy and a postgraduate degree in Modern History and International Relations from the University of Leuven in Belgium and obtained a master’s degree in European Studies from the University of Nancy in France.
